We believe that smaller is better

Our homes are deliberately small because that enables each one to function in the optimum way, as a close-knit, self-contained micro-community. Each house has a unique culture, which is defined by the people who live there and the carers who look after them. They are real homes, for real people, designed so that the residents can enjoy a high quality of life on a long-term basis, in a friendly environment where they are safe, comfortable, happy and stimulated.

Stimulation is a vital spark found in all our homes. By actively encouraging everyone to participate in a variety of activities, often within the local community, we ensure that they develop well, experience less frustration, and are able to lead contented, fulfilling lives.

Another key element of our ethos is the way relationships are built and nurtured with each individual resident, their whole family, staff members, advocates and placing authorities. Involving all interested parties helps to ensure that the highest standard of service is maintained.

Our Philosophy

Quality of life issues are always a major concern for the families and support staff of people with severe learning difficulties and the challenges associated with autism. We believe that each individual should be able to make personal choices about their life and have access to the community, however challenging their behaviour may appear to others.

Accordingly, our priorities are focused on ensuring that the individuals within our care are as contented and healthy as possible. Autonomy and choice are positively encouraged, as is the involvement of family members, independent advocates and our own staff, working in partnership with purchasing authorities and other professional groups.

The benefits of PROACT-SCIPr-UK ®

Our principles are based on the positive philosophy of PROACT-SCIPr-UK ®, which was developed by Marion Cornick and provides an evidence- and value-based whole-person approach to supporting individuals whose behaviour can challenge services. It is designed to encourage all staff to take a proactive approach to the needs of each individual in our care, and ensure that whenever possible we identify at an early stage when an individual is becoming distressed, and offer positive, non-restrictive responses to their distress. Minimal, non-aversive, supportive physical interventions are used only when essential for safety.
