How our service works

Our service is built around our residents

We provide specialist care and support for individuals with the most severe and profound cognitive impairment associated with autism, who exhibit high frequency and high intensity challenging behaviours that can restrict their access to the community. Many of the individuals also have epilepsy, a diagnosis of various mental health problems and other physical impairments often resulting from life threatening self-injurious behaviours.

All of the individuals we provide care for have limited communication skills and are often non-verbal. This makes it difficult for them to convey their needs and desires.

We therefore ensure that the development of communication skills is inherent in all of daily activities, through the integral use of objects-of-reference, Makaton, PIC symbols, and photographs.

Ongoing supportive programmes and person-centred planning ensure an enriched life in a positive environment and often lead to a reduction in the seriously challenging behaviours. Our environments are designed to safely support extremes of challenging and restrictive behaviours and our highly qualified and well-trained staff teams manage aggressive outbursts, self-injurious behaviour and emotional distress on a round-the-clock basis.

These difficulties impact on the quality of life of the individuals concerned, and it is our mission to ensure that each person achieves their maximum potential and has access to the facilities enjoyed by all members of society.

We enable this by providing high staff ratios at all times, so that the individuals are not only supported during periods of high anxiety, but also have the ongoing support they need to continue learning new skills and participate in new experiences.

Each of our homes offers person-centred 24-hour programmes, integrating personal care and activities. The programmes are designed to encourage the development of independent life skills and involvement in the local community, as well as promoting strategies that help the person to cope with the challenges of daily life. Individual planning is underpinned by the continual development of positive behaviour support, health action planning and the exploration of the spiritual and emotional aspects of each individual’s lives to ensure that our service meets the needs of the whole person.
